Guest Speaker Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian. Brad Avakian is the 9th Commissioner of Labor and Industries in Oregon’s history. He is a graduate of Washington County public school, Oregon State University and the Lewis and Clark Law School. In his 15 years of private law practice as a civil rights attorney, Brad fought for fair wages, good working conditions, and the right to organize and bargain. He has served in the Oregon House and the State Senate, where he was named Consensus Builder of the Year in 2007 for championing the Oregon Renewable Energy Act, the first expansion of the Bottle Bill in 30 years, the Clean Indoor Air Act and collective bargaining rights for childcare and adult foster care workers. Dedicated to a diverse work force, Brad served for seven years as Honorary Chair of the Oregon Business Leadership Network- a coalition of employers committed to hiring persons with disabilities. In November 2008 he was elected statewide as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries, where his top priority is strengthening Oregon’s workforce development system. Brad now also serves as a member of the Oregon Green Jobs Council.
